Our Major Occupation

Farming

One of the major occupations of Likpe Bala people is farming. The most common crops grown are grains, specifically corn and rice. Most families depend on farming to provide for their families. The farming season becomes a very busy time for the people. The rainfall pattern is very significant for the farmers as it is the only source of water for them to have a bumper harvest. Irrigation is non-existent mainly because of its high cost.

Trading

Despite their deep involvement in farming, our women are also very much involved in trading. Women generally trade in vegetables of all kinds, fish, meat, grains, tubers among others.  Market days see other traders from near and far troop our market to trade. It is also the main source of income for some people.

Artisanship

Some of the youth of Bala choose the path of artisanship particularly after they complete their Junior high school. Some choose those paths due to lack of financial resources  to further their education . while others also do so because of genuine passion of the profession. The male youth go into carpentry, masonry, plumbing, tailoring, mechanic among others. The women on the other hand go into hair dressing, dressmaking, catering among others. For many, this becomes their major source on income.
